Playa Guiones, eight kilometers from the Ranch, is the main beach in the Nosara area. A world class surfing destination, Playa Guiones is a 6 kilometer white sand beach which stretches between Punta Guiones and Playa Pelada. With it’s broad beach with gentle slope in the water, Guiones offers consistent waves year-round with long left and right beach breaks. It is the perfect beach for walking or jogging at low tide and is a favorite for the body surfers and boogie boarders. Don’t miss sunset when all the surfers converge to catch the end of the day waves.
Playa Pelada, 7 kilometers from the ranch is located on the other side of the cliff on the North end of Playa Guiones. Playa Pelada beach is slightly more rocky with an offshore reef which protects the bay and small local fishing boats. There is a walking path at the South end of Pelada which connects to Guiones beach. Playa Pelada is a favorite with both the local and tourist families and has a funky restaurant right on the beach called Olga’s. Olga’s has been there forever and provides a great place to check out the beach scene while sipping a cold Imperial.
Playa Ostional is the beach you are looking at from the deck of the house, although access to Ostional Beach is available about 3 kilometers North of the Ranch in the village of Ostional. Ostional beach is a nationally protected egg laying grounds to the Olive Ridley sea turtle (one of only five nesting areas in the world). An absolute must if the timing is right, is to head to the beach when the turtles are either coming ashore to lay their eggs or when the hatchlings emerge and head to the sea. Ostional is a black volcanic sand beach and has dangerous currents and rip-tides which make swimming there inadvisable.
Playa Garza is located six kilometers south of Playa Guiones and is a broad tree-lined white sand beach on a protected harbor. All of the sports fishing boats are moored off of Playa Garza. The village is located virtually on the sand and has a “funky” fishing vibe.
San Juanillo is located 10 kilometers North of Rancho Rio Montana and also has a protected harbor with a small fishing fleet. San Juanillo boasts nice shade trees on a beautiful white sandy beach. This beach is one of our favorites, a great place for a picnic under a palm tree with a good book in the beach bag. With little or no wave action, San Juanillo is the perfect place to do some snorkeling.
Playa Barrigona, 25 kilometers South of the Ranch, though not easy to find is one of the most beautiful and deserted beaches around Nosara. Ringed by beautiful palms and giant cliffs, Barrigona could easily be in a scene from Jurassic Park. This is the beach to come to for the day with a picnic. The ocean here is crystal clear and the relatively narrow cove can cause towering and powerful waves. Swim with caution and at low tide if possible.
